PDA itself does not require medication as it is an inborn neurotype, and we never recommend a medication-only approach to PDA struggles. Any medications, supplements, and changes to a child’s diet need to keep in mind their tolerance and collaboration to not cause further trauma, especially for children who struggle with restrictive eating (ARFID).
Prescription Medication
Prescription medication affects each person differently. Our online groups allows questions about specific prescriptions with the assumption that everyone has to go through a medical professional for safety and monitoring.
Medication can help PDA people with struggles around anxiety and depression, but it is an optional piece of the puzzle. Finding the triggers and appropriate lifestyle for the PDA person are going to be the most effective long term solution.
Nutritional Supplements
It is very likely that neurodivergent individuals are more sensitive to lacking certain vitamins, minerals, probiotics, etc making them more emotionally reactive when their bodies don’t feel well. Being neurodivergent also means that we frequently have co-occurring conditions that impact how we feel and what we need.
There are a number of specific nutritional supplements that parents and research report having a positive impact for their children. A functional medical doctor or naturopathic can help test for deficiencies and make recommendations.
Food Allergies
Parents also report a number of foods and ingredients that impact their children's behavior. Below are links specific to articulated food dyes.
